How can you determine the material of a plastic bottle cap?

Here's how to quickly identify the material of plastic bottle caps to use them more safely. The material of a plastic bottle cap directly affects safety and compatibility. For example, food-contact scenarios require non-toxic materials, while high-temperature environments need heat-resistant types. Learning how to identify the materials can help us avoid hazards and choose the right products. Look at the markings: This is the most reliable method. Material abbreviations are often printed on the bottom or inside of the cap. Common food-grade materials include PP (polypropylene) and HDPE (high-density polyethylene), accompanied by a recycling triangle symbol (5 = PP, 2 = HDPE). Food-grade caps must be labeled “for food contact” and may also indicate certifications like GB 4806 or FDA. The sealing ring may specify silicone, TPE, or PE. Feel the texture: PP caps are hard, tough, and elastic; they bounce back quickly when pressed, have a smooth surface, and good heat resistance. HDPE caps are more flexible, slightly rough on the surface, and can recover after deformation. Consider the scenario: Tamper-evident caps on beverage bottles are mostly HDPE (leak-proof, suitable for single use); sauce bottles and drink cup lids (which require repeated opening and high temperature resistance) are mostly PP; baby bottles and space cup lids often use PP with silicone rings (safe, BPA-free, and sterilization-resistant). Small tips: Prefer bottle caps made of PP/HDPE with silicone/TPE sealing rings and ensure they have food-contact certification. Avoid low-quality products that are grayish, brittle when pinched, or have an unusual smell.
